Adaptations...A Way of Life...

After gaining background knowledge of adaptations, squid, and the squid’s many adaptations, our class dissected squid earlier this week.  Based on your knowledge, which adaptation do you believe is the most important for the squid's survival?  (Be careful to give specific details to support your answer.) Please review the blog comment expectations found in the column to the right.

  1. I think that the squid’s most important adaptation is the torpedo shape. I think that this adaptation is the most important because if the squid didn’t have the pen to keep its torpedo shape, then it would be floppy and wouldn’t be able to move around very well, because the pen is one of the two hard things in a squid’s body. That is why I think the torpedo shape is the most important adaptation.

  2. The most important adaptation for the squid (in my opinion) is its tentacles. For every animal to stay alive, it needs a source of food to eat. The tentacles help grab the food, and the suction cups makes it so that the squid can hold onto the food. This allows the squid to have its tasty snack.

  3. Dear Mrs. Blake,

I think that the siphon is the most important because it has many jobs that it has to do for the squid to live. Its first job is to move the squid. The squid would be easy prey if it could not move. The siphon blows water propel the squid forward. The squid would also be easy prey if it couldn’t shoot ink out of the Siphon. Without being able to move or have no defense the squid would die almost instantaneously when attacked.

  4. I think the siphon is the most important part of the squid. I think that because the siphon is a multi purpose part of the squid. It propels itself through the water and excrete waste. If the squid didn’t have the siphon then all of the waste would gather up inside and wouldn’t be able to leave the squid's body. Once there is too much waste then the squid could possibly die because it would be to fat. When the squid gets fat it would eventually explode because the waste wouldn't have a place to go.

  5. I think that the tentacles are the best adaptation because it holds its food while it eats and helps out swim in the water. It also helps navigate though the water. They are longer than the arms and have suction cups at the end of the tentacles.

  6. I think that the siphon is the most important adaptation of the squid. The siphon helps it swim by propelling the squid through the water by pushing water out of the siphon. The siphon also helps because he would not be able to swim without the siphon. The siphon also helps it by being a self-defense mechanism. The Siphon ejects the ink and then the ink covers the enemy in ink and the squid can escape. Without the siphon the squid would not be here without this adaptation.

  7. Dear Mrs. Blake,

I think the most important adaptation for the squid is the beak. The reasons I think that is because it is the only way for the squid to get food to it’s body. Also, food is very important because it helps humans, animals, and organisms live. Next, without food squids cannot survive because squids cannot just live on water. Reason, a squid especially has to have food because a squid is so tiny and has a little body which means it needs as much energy as it can to penetrate through the water. A beak helps the squid break down food and other things that it needs to break down. This is why I think the beak is the most important adaptation.

  8. After gaining knowledge about a squid’s adaptation I believe the most important adaptation is the tentacles. The reason why I believe this is because without the squid's tentacles the squid can’t catch it’s prey. Squids use their tentacles to snatch their prey. The tentacles help hold the prey while the squid is eats the prey. The tentacles have suction cups at the tip of the tentacle that help hold on to things. This is is why I believe the tentacles are important when it comes to the squid’s adaptation.

    Dear Mrs. Blake,
I think that the most important adaption of the squid is its siphon. The siphon has many different purposes that help it survive. The siphon helps it swim which can help it escape from predators by sucking in water and then blowing it back out really fast. Without the ability to swim the squid would be like a non-venomous jellyfish and would be easy food. Another defense mechanism of the siphon is that it can spray ink as a camouflage to help escape predators. After the squid sprays its ink it can then use its siphon to quickly swim away. The siphon also helps get rid of all the squids finished stomach contents (poop and pee). If the squid was unable to get rid of that then its body would explode because it was overfilled. The last feature of the siphon is to help it reproduce. This helps start the baby squids life cycle and helps keep the squid population alive. So I think that because of all these reasons, the squids siphon is its most important adaptation.

  10. I think all of the squids adaptions are important, but the one that I thin is the most important are the tentacles. I think the tentacles are the most important body part of the squid because that is how they get food. They grab the food with there tentacles and the food sticks to there suction cups then they bring the food to the beak in the center of the arms.

  11. The squid has many adaptations, but the adaptation that is most important for it’s survival would be it’s siphon. The siphon is most important because it allows the squid to move. The siphon is like a propellor, blasting it through the water. It sucks up water and shoots it out allowing the squid to move. If not for the siphon the squid would only stay in one place, hardly ever moving. Although I think the squid really would need things such as the pen, if the squid only had a pen it may be straight up, but it couldn’t move.

  12. I think the most important adaptation the squid has are the siphon, arms, and the long tentacles. First, I think the siphon is a very important part of the squid because it helps it escape predators by sucking in water a shooting it out of the siphon which then make the squid move fast. Second, I think the arms and the tentacles are the most important part on the squid because when a squid sees its prey the long tentacles attach to its prey with the suck-shun cups it has. Then it pulls it in to the squid's eight arms which then pull it to its mouth. Then the squid's beak bites little pieces of meat off the prey. After it's done, it just swims away.

  13. I think that the most important adaptation of the squid is the siphon. The siphon is really important because that is its way of protection and it’s way of disposing waste. Even though the squid does not use its ink sack every day, it still is there just incase it needs the protection. The siphon also helps the squid move through the water making its back and forth moving way.

  14. Based on my knowledge I think that the squids most important adaptation is the pen. I think the pen is an important for three reasons. One reason I the pen is important is because if the squid didn’t have a pen it would loose it’s torpedo shape. The pen also is important is because if the squid did not have its torpedo shape then is would swim weirdly and would be able to get away from predators fast enough. Another reason the pen is important is because it one of the only hard parts in the squid so it keeps all of its organs in place.

  15. Of all the adaptations of a squid, I believe the beak is the most important feature that allows the squid to survive. The tentacles of the squid grab or pull in food while the beak is used to separate the of food into smaller pieces. This helps because a squid can only eat so much at a time, so the beak helps break it into easier proportions. If the squid bites off more than it can chew, the squid might die.

  16. The most important adaptation of the squid is its ink sack because it protects the squid from predators. This allows them to reproduce and have an increase in population. The ink can spray to other animals so they don't get to the squid. The ink sack can help the squid survive and is their adaptation because of the protection it gives them.

  17. I think that the most important adaption related to the squid’s survival is the siphon. I believe This for many reasons. First, the siphon is its means of travel. Also, it releases waist. Last but not least, the siphon is used to hide from predators by spreading ink if needed. most of these reasons are needed by the siphon if the other adaptations are to do what is needed.

  18. If was to chose the most important part on the whole squids body it would be the siphon. The reason why I think the siphon is the most important part is because it spits out water so it can move and if a matter infact the squid couldn't move it would be an easy target for predators. The siphon could also be used for a self defense mechanism, because it spits out ink so its predator can't see where the squid is at so than the squid could run away.

  19. Well I think that the most important adaptation for a squids survival is its tentacles. I think that because it is the way they get there food. All human beings need food to survive. The tentacles catch their food for them to live. They also get energy from that food which means that they can move around. Tentacles play in my opinion the biggest role in a squids life. That is why a squids most important adaptation is there long tentacles.

  20. Dear Mrs. Blake,

I think that the most important adaptation that the squid has is the pen or the siphon. The pen because if the squid didn’t have it, it would be oddly shaped and unable to move. This is why I think that one of the most important adaptations is the pen. I think the siphon is important because if the squid didn’t have the siphon, then the squid would not be able to move or have self defense. The siphon has to propel the squid to catch food or get away from predators. The siphon also squirts out ink at the predators that it is being chased by. This gets in the way of the predators eyes and then they can’t see so the squid can escape. These reasons are why the pen and siphon are some of the most important parts of a squids adaptations.

  21. The squid has many adaptations, but I believe the one that is most crucial to its survival is the siphon. Not only is the siphon used to get rid of waste and lay eggs but it is also used to propel the squid through the water. Without the siphon the squid would just drift around lazily. It would not be able to evade predators or hunt for food, and therefore would not survive for very long. It is for this reason I believe that of the squid's many adaptations, the siphon is the most crucial to its survival.

  22. A squid has many important adaptations. I believe the siphon is the most important adaptation of the squid’s survival for several reasons. The first reason is because the siphon helps the squids swim with more force. When the squid takes in water through the siphon, it pushes the water out to help move through the water. Another reason is because ink comes out of the siphon. Releasing ink gives a squid a chance to escape danger by blinding a predator with the ink. The ink helps to defend squids. A final reason why the siphon is the most important adaptation to help a squid survive is squids release waist from their bodies. After absorbing the nutrients from the food the waist is released. The siphon is the most important adaptation because it helps squids survive and protect themselves.

  23. The squid has many important adaptations. But to me the most important one is the siphon. The siphon helps the squid in so many ways. It produces the ink so that the squid can blind the enemies and that keeps them from being eaton! It also keeps them alive. It produces the oxygen which obviously keeps them alive. They need air to survive! It also lets the waist out. There is no other place to let the waist out so that siphon comes in handy. The siphon may look like a little tube, but trust me it is much more than that!

  24. I'd say it's the squids pen because without it the squid would just flop around without this adaptation. Predators would kill and eat them with ease and would die out. They would also not be able to move around catch Etc. They'ed also not have a shape of anything. So basically the couldn't live very without the pen.

  25. In my opinion for the squids survival is and for it to adapt then I have a few opinions.
First off the squid sometimes it will blend in so it will be able to blend in and hide away from predators. Second off the squid may squirt ink at predators and blind the predator and run away. Third, the squid may eat tiny shrimp of algae by using his tentacle. These three reasons show what kind of adaptations a squid has.

  26. The most important parts of the squids body is the siphon and the beak. The siphon is what propels the squid through the water, and, it is a way of defense. The siphon would shoot ink out of its siphon at predators trying to harm it. While the other animal is distracted the squid gets away. The beak is also very important. It bites off small pieces of food from the prey so it doesnt damage the brain.

  27. The squid has many important adaptations.I think that the pen is the most important adaption because without the pen the squid would have no control of where it goes. The pen holds the body of the squid together. So the pen is like a spinal cord for the squid. The squid would probably not be able to do anything without the pen.

  28. When we did the squid lab I think the most imortant adaption is the pen. I thinks its the pen becase if it didn't have it it would't be able to swim properly. It would also be a easy target for the animals that want to eat it.
